Stonehenge was built 5000 years ago in the English county of Wiltshire. |
A prehistoric temple, the stones are aligned with the movements of the sun. |
Was it a place of worship or healing? or a place for dying? perhaps an ancient burial ground? |
The purpose of Stonehenge remains a mystery. There will always be debate about its meaning. |
Summer and Winter Solstice celebrations are an important part of Stonehenge. |
Do you have a theory? Have you walked among the stones? |
My niece lives about 15 miles from Stonehenge, so until the early 1980s we could walk in among the stones. But due to vandalism they roped them and then fenced them. It is an awe inspiring place. As an archaeologist, it's always been a beloved place. Isn't it fun how you top a rise around a corner on the A303 and there it is! Thanks for your wonderful photos and memories...haven't been there for 3 years now...glad to see it's still there and well! Lol!

Yes, I have walked there and loved visiting and imagining. What fascinated me were the other mounds nearby. When I was at Stonehenge I bought the book Sarum and it was so fascinating to read about the area long ago.
