We are often asked what that large plant is growing over the arbor. The answer - KIWI. Yes, kiwi. There are several varieties that will tolerate our cold winters. As a strong vine Kiwi requires a sturdy fence, trellis or arbor to grow on. There are many varieties of Kiwi, some with variegated leaves and some fuzzy leaved like this one. You need at least one boy kiwi and up to 8 girl kiwis in order to yield fruit.

The Kiwi crop in our backyard only grows to about the size of a grape, never quite ripe enough to enjoy, alas.
the kiwiw is a very cool plant and i had no idea it would survive my cold clime until your mom wrote about it in her twelve month herbal. really pretty flowers also. thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteThe Kiwi vines and flowers are very attractive. I'll have to research how they would grow here in GA. I would love something like this to help camouflage a chain link fence.

ReplyDeleteWe use to have kiwi, but it must have been a different variety. I don't remember ever seeing blossoms like in your picture. They are very pretty and a beautiful cover for your arbor.
