A recent Rosemary House traveling herb seminar took us to several gardens in Delaware. A mere two hours away by bus, we explored gardens and hidden treasures. The Gibraltar Gardens are a little known garden in downtown Wilmington, DE. This 19th Century Estate is a part of Preservation Delaware.
This distinctive garden was designed over 100 years ago by Marian Cruger Coffin, the first female landscape architect in the United States.
The 2 acre garden is a "diamond in the rough' but with its overstuffed perennial beds, overgrown trees and shrubby roses, it is a romantic mystical place.
This was a huge three story magnolia tree. The garden presented with 'strong bones' with its design.
The statuary in the garden was impressive and placed along a path that led directly to the tea house.
What a beautiful place! And I did not know the name of Marian Cruger Coffin, so thank you for bringing it to our attention. (I love to study famous "first" women in history!)
