Winterthur, DE

Our recent Motorcoach Tour included a stop at Winterthur mainly to visit the Downton Abbey clothing exhibit, but no trip to Winterthur would be complete without touring the gardens and the 175 room house.  It was a hot day so we were fortunate to tour the gardens by Tram.

The Woodland estate was designed by DuPont along with landscape architect Marian Coffin to blend the garden into a 2,600 acre natural landscape. It looks natural but is carefully cultivated to do so.  Underneath the trees are plants of Azalea, and many many wildflowers.
There are a few lawn areas for playing croquette or putting a few golf balls.
It is quite an extensive property which is perfectly in keeping with the grandeur of the house.
As an overnight guest at Winterthur.  You would be given a morning paper from your home region and your morning breakfast would be delivered to your room when you wanted and according to your specifications.    Winterthur is well known for their American furniture collections also.

Although we enjoyed the beautiful natural gardens and the Americana filled mansion, we were excited to visit the special exhibit featuring the costumes of Downton Abbey. The exhibit runs through Jan. 4, 2015.

  1. How exciting to visit here. That last photo looks like you are both in England.
