Mamajuana

Many areas where you travel have a famous local beverage and Mamajuana is the native Dominican Republic drink. It is said it was originally a tisane of the local Taino Indians until Columbus came on the scene which is when it was made with alcohol.

It is a mixture of many barks combined and steeped with red wine and honey and of course, rum too.  It is taken for medicinal reasons to increase vitality in men!  It is also attributed for female complaints, arthritis, helps your hair grow and more, lots more.

It is made with a variety of local woods and leaves, with each family making their own recipe. The ingredients include Timacle (Chiococca alba), Osua, Marabeli (Securidaca virgata), Palo de Maguei, Palo Indio, Bohuco Caro, Brasil, Canelilla.  Who knows what exotic ingredients are in the blend!

We do know it was quite tasty,
as you can't go wrong with rum, red wine and honey!
